Q: Tell me a bit about WeightWatchers: What is your mission and what makes your approach unique?
A: WeightWatchers is the global leader in science-backed weight management, offering a holistic model of care that combines scientific expertise and human connection. WeightWatchers is the most studied commercial weight management program in the world, delivered through its #1 U.S. doctor-recommended weight-loss program. Our holistic, personalized approach also includes U.S.-based clinical interventions, medications when clinically appropriate, and a global network of coaches and community support. In a landscape crowded with contradictory advice, isolating apps, and one-size-fits-all solutions, WeightWatchers offers a proven path forward, grounded in empathy and designed to help every member feel better in their body and live a longer, healthier life.
Q: How do you balance the need for comprehensive medical record reconciliation with the operational demands of serving millions?
A: To really provide and serve obesity care, we want to make sure that we do proper record reconciliation. Not every provider does it, but we just felt like the best possible medicine in 2025 is going to be doing medical record reconciliation. Traditionally, it’s a very hard problem in healthcare, right? How do you ask a doctor who only has 10-15 minutes with a patient to fully understand literally hundreds of pages of medical information about the patient in a digestible way to make the best possible treatment decision around their weight or their diet, or even other symptoms related to type two diabetes or menopause?
How do we actually incorporate medical record reconciliation to provide the best possible industry leading care, but still do it in a way that makes sense and enables us to scale? That was the precise problem and we definitely wanted to find the best possible offering in the market, and that's what lead us to Metriport.
Q: How time-consuming was the back-and-forth with patients to gather medical history before implementing automated record retrieval?
A: Before medical records, it was just taking the intake and going back and forth with the patient, but now they look at the intake with much less back and forth and understand the patient on a much deeper, more comprehensive level.
Q: How have you integrated Metriport into your clinical workflows? What does this process look like today?
A: The majority of the time we use Metriport's consolidated summary because they’re optimized for the precise kind of obesity care that our doctors want to provide. These summaries will be optimized for menopause care as well, as we recently launched WeightWatchers for Menopause.
What happens is, we have a bunch of patients that come in, they'll fill out an intake form, and then we schedule a clinician visit. During this time, we want to make sure the clinician is able to get the best information, both directly from the patient, as well as through their medical data. With the intake form, we already had that going really well. That's an in-house flow that we built. But for that medical data, we leverage Metriport entirely. We ask Metriport to pull in the records for the patient. Our clinicians get the full, highly obesity-care optimized summary at their fingertips, so that within 20 seconds, they’re able to skim through it and see the full picture.
Q: What were your initial thoughts after you began using Metriport? What factors were the most important to you when evaluating the data?
A: We explored four different vendors including Metriport and we were able to test out two. We ended up picking Metriport as the clear winner, based on four different factors:
The fourth point was huge for us, since the ability to process all this information and incorporate it directly into our providers’ workflows is pretty new. I don't think anyone's really figured it out yet, right? So the mindset Metriport has is very powerful, ie. "let's figure out how to use all this data the way we need it, rather than having pre-defined workflows". With these four factors, you can make an easy argument that Metriport is the best out of all of the options we had going into this.
Q: How does the data from Metriport assist WeightWatchers in providing better care?
A: Overall, Metriport’s data allows us to speed up our time to clinical decisions, while making the best quality clinical decisions. We have internal metrics and Metriport has helped us make quicker decisions after intake, reducing the time between intake and an actual treatment decision. That's a KPI that Metriport helps with. We also run quality assurance and it's helped us there too.
Q: What sort of data do you share back to the HIEs via Metriport?
A: We contribute the same data we would share with a primary care physician (PCP). Essentially, any PCP requesting information from WeightWatchers Clinic receives our treatment data through the same streamlined system. This bidirectional data flow ensures continuity of care across providers.
Q: What would you say is the biggest opportunity that Metriport has unlocked for your business?
A: Metriport has enabled us to scale to hundreds of thousands of patients and expand. Beyond obesity care, we're pretty excited about all the new opportunities Metriport will help us unlock as we expand to new treatment options. Jorge and the team have been super helpful with that. Recently, we added a new menopause program to the WeightWatchers app. We've always wanted more data so we want to take advantage of the new lab data available through Metriport as well, especially since we offer prescription options such as HRT, GLP-1s, and other evidence-based treatments, all monitored by licensed clinicians.
