Challenge: Specialty Care Requires the Full Clinical Picture
Tono Health was built on a straightforward premise: patients across the country deserve access to leading specialists, from home, covered by insurance. Delivering on that promise means seeing patients with medical dermatology and endocrinology needs, often with complex, multi-layered histories that span years of care across multiple systems.
For a virtual specialty practice, that creates an immediate records challenge. Timely access to comprehensive patient information isn't a nice-to-have. It's the baseline for delivering good care. Tono needed current and prior diagnoses, lab and imaging results, and physician notes, pulled reliably from health systems running all manner of different EHRs. And they needed it integrated directly into their own EHR, not bolted on as a separate tool.
Solution: An API That Works the Way Their Team Does
Tono found in Metriport something that matched both their technical requirements and their pace. Metriport's robust infrastructure gave them immediate access to patient data across health systems, regardless of which EHR those systems run. More importantly, the integration experience itself reflected how Tono works: quickly, collaboratively, and with a bias toward getting things done.
Tono's CTO, Ethan Cohen, built a full integration with Metriport's API in a matter of days, enabling the team to pull FHIR resources for patients from the start. From there, they began ingesting HTML medical record summaries from Metriport directly into their EHR, giving physicians a complete clinical picture without the friction of switching systems or hunting across records.
Beyond the initial integration, Metriport's depth of coverage, data quality, and standardized data formats reduce administrative work for Tono's physicians, freeing them to focus on what they do best.
Geographic expansion has become straightforward. As Tono grows to serve patients in new states, Metriport's extensive network coverage means they can support those regions without building one-off integrations for new systems.

Results: Physicians Focused on Care, Not Records
Tono's physicians now arrive at every visit with a comprehensive, up-to-date clinical summary already in their EHR. Medical record summaries give doctors what they need to deliver specialized care efficiently, without being slowed down by administrative overhead or incomplete information.
For a specialty practice built to scale, that difference is material. Dermatology and endocrinology patients often bring years of prior care history with them. Getting that history quickly, in a structured and readable format, is what allows Tono's team to provide the kind of care that earns their patients' trust.
A Partnership, Not Just a Product
What distinguishes the Metriport relationship for Tono isn't only the technology. It's how the partnership works in practice.
“Working closely with the Metriport team has been our favorite aspect of the partnership. It really feels like a service rather than just a product that we use.”
Through weekly video calls and around-the-clock Slack support, Tono's feedback finds its way into product updates and roadmap decisions. That responsiveness has made the collaboration feel less like a vendor relationship and more like an extension of the team.
As Tono continues to expand access to specialty care across the country, Metriport is a core part of how they do it.
